Just One Thing
Imagine driving and trying to get where you want to be by directing everyone else on the road. This is what people do daily in relationships. Now picture yourself as the person who decides where to construct the roads. A critical point is where the least amount of effort delivers maximum results. Rick Hanson's simple book "Just One Thing" speaks directly to the critical point for positive change in every aspect of your life - your brain. The only question left to ask is where do you want to go? Don't be surprised if people follow you as you seemingly effortlessly construct roads to health, happiness, love and paradise. Reason this book tops my list of Essentials for The Life
Skills Report Card.
Children: The Challenge
A top seller for decades, and routinely cited by today's child rearing professionals as a personal favorite, this divine book reaffirmed me as "Parent" when my first daughter battled me fiercely for the role at age three. No other book ever matched this one for providing simple to follow directions that literally transformed my parenting overnight.
How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk
Rarely do you get to read your parenting book and be entertained by it too - this text provides the exception. In it Faber and Mazlish brilliantly expose parents' worst methods of communicating through actual sample conversations (you'll find your style I promise - and your spouse's!) They then provide easy suggestions for improviement. Also popular for decades, keep this book on your shelf of easy to reach favorites because your ever growing children will assure you want to re-visit it every couple of years.

If ever you believed one size fit all when it came to children, prepare to be humbled. Through sharing of multiple, engaging, real life stories Brooks and Goldstein soften hearts and broaden our capacity to appreciate the unique temperament and personality of every child. More importantly, they provide the instruction necessary to focus on and maximize each child's strengths and confidence. Reduce your battles and fall in love with your child again with this read!
When You Say Thank you Mean It!
Most parents are interested in teaching their children gratitude, self-respect, integrity, forgiveness, and compassion but few possessed simple proactive means - until now. Destined to become a classic, Mary O'Donahue fills a critical void in child rearing texts with her newly published book "When You Say Thank You Mean It." I like this book so much I advised Mary to insert tear out business card pages at the back of future copies so people would have an easier means of recommending it to others. Honored and privileged to include this in our Life Skills Report Card Essentials library.
Relationship with spouse
How to Win Friends & Influence People
by Dale Carnegie
I know I know, cheezy title. I am embarrassed now confessing I didn't read this book for years because of it. So happy I got over myself as it ranks as my number one relationship book for any individual. While I would personally have titled it something like "Golden Rule Hits the Streets," the fact is this text has managed to remain a best seller for seven decades - yes decades - for a reason. Disliking the title or even the content doesn't make Carnegie's points any less true. Read it, practice it, benefit from its wisdom or forever suffer the trials of ignorance and insanity.

Ten cheers to Goleman for his groundbreaking text on why emotional intelligence is in fact more critical to your child's success in life than academics.
